Michael Burlingame Lecture and Cocktail Reception April 14, 2017 6pm

— Michael Burlingame, historian and author of “Abraham Lincoln: A Life,” will give a talk at the Columns Museum in Milford, on April 14 — the date of President Lincoln’s assassination, 152 years ago.

The Pike County Historical Society and Museum will host the evening to commemorate the fateful day. The Columns is home to the society and to the famed flag stained by Lincoln’s blood.

Burlingame recently won the 2010 Lincoln Prize, sponsored by the Gilder-Lehrman Institute for American History and Gettysburg College, for the finest scholarly work in English on Abraham Lincoln, or the American Civil War soldier, or a subject relating to their era. It was also a co-winner of the annual book prize awarded by the Abraham Lincoln Institute of Washington, D.C., and won the Russell P. Strange Book Award given annually by the Illinois State Historical Society for the best book on Illinois history.

The title of Burlingame’s lecture is,”What New Can Be Said About Abraham Lincoln?”

The deadly act by John Wilkes Booth led to Lincoln’s death early the next morning. The historical society perpetuates the Lincoln legacy by hosting scholarly lectures and presentations that tell the many sides of the story connected to the somber artifact housed in the museum.

The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with cocktails and a selection of hors d’oeuvres common to the Lincoln era (the museum promises: “We will refrain from serving aspic of tongue, however. You’re welcome!”).

The reception will be held on the main floor of the Columns Museum, followed by the lecture and assorted cakes and coffee in the Foundation Room.

The museum will also unveil the latest addition to its Lincoln collection.

Tickets are $50 and may be obtained by calling 570-296-8126 or by email at pikemuse@ptd.net.mtandl
