Gourlay Stage Costumes on Display

Historic Costumes on Display At The Columns

The Vintage Clothing Committee of the Pike County Historical Society have assembled a special exhibition to commemorate the 150th anniversary of President Lincoln’s assassination.

The stage costumes which belonged to Jenny Gourlay, an actress in the performance of the play being performed the night of the President’s assassination, are currently on display at the museum. Miss Gourlay, who spent the last 25 years of her life in Milford, also brought the famed blood stained flag with her when she moved to Milford in 1888. The costumes, flag and other items including her stage shoes, where donated to the museum in 1954 by her son, Vivian Paul Struthers. The Columns museum has housed these artifacts related to the death of Lincoln and Miss Gourlay for many years. The Lincoln flag, a 36 star American flag which was used as bunting for the Presidential box at Ford’s theater, has recently made its way back to Ford’s for a 3 month stay. The flag will be the focal point of a special exhibition at Ford’s called Silent Witnesses: Artifacts of the Lincoln Assassination until May 26th. The costumes are being featured in the flag’s absence in hopes of raising funds to have them stabilized and prepared for permanent display.
